# Registered as a PM Surya Ghar vendor. Now make the listing pay

> Installers register with each DISCOM they want to work in, with a declaration and a performance bank guarantee. The DISCOM then lists them on the national rooftop solar portal, where homeowners choose a vendor. The listing brings calls, but the installer who answers fast and keeps the paperwork moving gets the job.

## From registration to revenue

Each step below is where installers lose time or customers. Check your DISCOM's current notice for the exact forms and amounts.

- **Registering with the DISCOM.** Registration is per DISCOM, with a declaration and a performance bank guarantee. Working across two DISCOM areas means registering with both. Fix: Register first where most of your enquiries already come from, using the DISCOM's own notice as the checklist.
- **The national portal login.** Once the DISCOM uploads your details, you log in to the national portal and add your contact details and rates. Wrong or outdated details send homeowners elsewhere. Fix: Keep one person responsible for the portal profile, and check it every month.
- **The homeowner calls from the list.** A homeowner compares a few vendors from the portal list and calls them. Calls to a busy site supervisor go unanswered. Fix: A number that is always answered, with the bill and roof details taken on the first call.
- **The paperwork weeks.** Feasibility, installation, net metering and the subsidy claim take weeks. Homeowners who hear nothing call the DISCOM, or you, angry. Fix: A WhatsApp update at every step, so the homeowner knows where the file is.
- **After the subsidy.** The system is running, the subsidy has come, and the homeowner's neighbours are asking who did it. Fix: Ask for a referral once the subsidy lands, and answer referred calls the same day.

## What an unanswered portal call costs

Count one month of calls to the number on your portal profile, and how many went unanswered.

- **Calls a month from the listing:** 60
- **Unanswered or not called back that day:** 15
- **Answered calls that become installations:** 1 in 6
- **Your margin on a 3 kW system:** ₹25,000

If those 15 calls converted like the rest, that is 2 or 3 more installations and about ₹60,000 a month in margin, from a listing you put up a bank guarantee to get.

These are example numbers, not figures from any installer. Your call log gives you the first two.

## Keep the homeowner informed

Most angry calls in a subsidy job are about not knowing. One message at each step prevents them.

- Application filed on the portal, with the application number
- DISCOM feasibility approved, and the installation date
- Installation done, with photos and the inspection request
- Net meter installed and the system commissioned
- Subsidy claim submitted, and the usual time it takes to reach the bank account
- Send updates as approved WhatsApp templates, only to homeowners who gave their number for the job

## Who answers the portal calls

Small installers usually rely on the owner's phone. That works until the first busy season.

- **The owner's mobile.** Fixes: The homeowner speaks to the decision maker. Falls short: Missed on every site visit, and nobody follows up the missed ones.
- **An office executive.** Fixes: Calls answered in office hours, with notes kept. Falls short: A salary, and evening and Sunday calls still wait.
- **Call forwarding between staff.** Fixes: Fewer calls ring out. Falls short: Nobody owns the follow-up, and notes get lost.
- **An AI receptionist.** Fixes: Answers every call, takes the bill and roof details, books the survey and sends status updates. ₹10,000 a month after a ₹30,000 setup, with 1,000 minutes, flat. Falls short: Does not size systems or quote prices. Your engineer does that after the survey.
- **An AI sales employee.** Fixes: Also calls back form enquiries and missed calls within minutes, and follows up quotes. Falls short: ₹50,000 setup, then ₹22,500 a month.
