Subsidy rates from MNRE's PM Surya Ghar guidelines (amended 7 July 2025): per kW for the first 2 kW and the 3rd kW, nothing beyond 3 kW, for homes using made-in-India panels and cells. Your state may add its own subsidy. Savings assume every unit replaces one you would have bought; net-metering rules and panel ageing change the real figure.

Questions owners ask
Straight answers
How much is the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?
For a home, the central subsidy is ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the 3rd kW, so ₹78,000 at most; there is no extra subsidy beyond 3 kW. In special category states and UTs it is ₹33,000 and ₹19,800 per kW. Housing societies and RWAs get ₹18,000 per kW (₹19,800 in special category areas) for common facilities, up to 500 kW. Source: MNRE operational guidelines, amended 7 July 2025.
Who can claim it?
Residential consumers who install a rooftop system with domestically made panels and cells through the national portal, pmsuryaghar.gov.in. States and UTs may add their own subsidy on top. The guidelines run the scheme until 31 March 2027.
How many units does 1 kW of solar make?
MNRE's rooftop FAQ says one kW can generate 4 to 5.5 units on a clear sunny day. Across the year, with cloudy and monsoon days, an average of 3 to 4 units a day is a safer planning figure; PIB says a 3 kW system can generate over 300 units a month on average.
What size system do I need?
PIB's guide: 1 to 2 kW for up to 150 units a month, 2 to 3 kW for 150 to 300 units, and above 3 kW for more than 300 units. Check your roof space and sanctioned load with your installer.
Is the benchmark cost what I will pay?
No. MNRE's benchmark (₹50,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹45,000 for each kW after, higher in special category areas) is the figure the subsidy was set against. Real quotes vary by brand, roof and installer, so enter your quote for an accurate payback.
