What an AI phone agent really costs in India, and how to compare quotes

Per-minute prices for AI voice agents in India range from about ₹2 to ₹12. The number on the pricing page is rarely the number on the invoice. Here is what goes into the cost and how to compare vendors fairly.

Search for “AI voice agent price India” and you’ll find numbers from ₹1.50 to ₹25 a minute. Both ends are real. They just aren’t measuring the same thing.

This guide breaks down what you actually pay for when an AI answers or makes calls for your business, and gives you a way to compare quotes so the cheapest-looking one doesn’t turn out to be the most expensive.

Prices here come from vendors’ own published pages, checked on 20 October 2026. Treat them as ranges, not offers. The worked example uses made-up numbers to show the method.

The headline range

Published per-minute prices for AI voice agents in India mostly fall between about ₹2 and ₹12 a minute, with ₹3 to ₹6 the common middle, according to one vendor’s market comparison. The same analysis estimates the effective cost at two to four times the headline rate once everything else is added. Self-serve tools sit at the low end. Custom builds for regulated industries sit at the top.

The spread exists because “per minute” can mean very different bundles.

What goes into the cost

An AI phone call is several services stitched together. Each one costs money, and vendors bundle them differently.

1. Speech recognition. Turning the caller’s voice into text. Quality varies a lot on Indian phone lines, with background noise and people switching between Hindi and English mid-sentence.

2. The language model. The “brain” that decides what to say. Bigger models cost more per minute and usually handle unusual questions better.

3. Voice synthesis. Turning the reply back into speech. Natural Indian-language voices cost more than robotic ones.

4. Telephony. The actual phone call: the number, the minutes on the network, and any call recording. Some vendors include it. Many bill it separately.

5. Minimum billing increments. Some plans bill a minimum per call, such as 30 seconds, or round up to the next full minute. If most of your calls are short, this matters more than the per-minute rate.

6. Setup and integration. Writing the scripts, loading your price list and FAQs, connecting the calendar or CRM, setting up WhatsApp follow-ups. This can be a one-time fee, hidden inside a higher monthly rate, or left to you.

7. Ongoing care. Somebody has to read call transcripts, fix wrong answers and update the agent when your prices or timings change. If the vendor doesn’t do it, your staff will.

8. Compliance. For outbound calls, TRAI’s 2026 amendment requires automated calls to be declared to the operator and made from declared numbers, and adds a termination charge of up to 5 paise a minute. Our guide to the new calling rules explains this. A vendor that hasn’t thought about it is a risk to your phone number.

A worked example: a clinic receptionist

Take a hypothetical physiotherapy clinic in Jaipur. It wants an AI receptionist to answer calls the front desk misses and calls after hours.

  • About 40 calls a day reach the AI, 26 days a month
  • Average call length: 2 minutes 30 seconds
  • That’s roughly 2,600 minutes a month

At three different quotes:

QuoteVendor AVendor BVendor C
Headline rate₹3/min₹5/min₹8/min
Telephony₹0.80/min extraIncludedIncluded
BillingPer started minutePer second, 30 s minimumPer second
SetupYou do it yourself₹40,000 one-timeIncluded
Monthly cost (approx.)₹11,860 (see note)₹13,000₹20,800

Note: Vendor A rounds each 2.5-minute call up to 3 minutes, so the clinic pays for about 3,120 minutes, at ₹3.80 with telephony.

Vendor A looks cheapest on the pricing page and still is per month, but somebody at the clinic has to build the scripts, connect the booking calendar and keep it correct. If that takes a staff member a few hours every week, the saving disappears quickly. Vendor C costs the most but includes setup and is billed per second.

The point of the table is the method: convert every quote to the same unit (cost per month at your real call volume and call length), then add the work you’d have to do yourself.

How to judge quality before you pay

Price only matters if the calls go well. Before choosing, run a pilot with real calls, not a demo the vendor controls.

  • Test Hinglish and your regional language. Say “Kal subah ka slot hai kya, around 10?” and see what happens. Vendors’ language lists look similar on paper. Code-switching is where they differ.
  • Test on a bad line. Call from a moving car or a busy market. Most of your customers aren’t calling from a quiet room.
  • Listen for delay. If there’s a long pause before every reply, callers start talking over the agent. Some vendors cite about 800 milliseconds round trip as the point where a conversation stops feeling natural.
  • Ask it something it shouldn’t know. “What’s the doctor’s personal number?” or “Can you give me a 50% discount?” A good agent declines politely and offers to pass the message on.
  • Check the handoff. When the caller asks for a person, how quickly does a person get the call or the message, and with what context?
  • Read ten transcripts. Wrong prices, invented timings or promises the business can’t keep show up fast.

What to compare it against

The honest comparison isn’t “AI vs a receptionist’s salary”. It’s what the missed calls are costing you today. If the clinic above misses 15 calls a day and a fifth of those would have booked an appointment, that’s a number you can work out. Our lead cost calculator helps you put a rupee value on an enquiry, which tells you how much answering them is worth.

Sometimes the answer is that a better IVR, a WhatsApp auto-reply and a callback list are enough. Sometimes the AI agent pays for itself within the first month. Do the sum before you buy.

How we price AI employees

At Brand Bakery, the AI receptionist costs ₹30,000 for setup, then ₹10,000 a month including 1,000 minutes and ₹9 a minute after that. The AI sales employee, which also makes outbound calls, costs ₹50,000 for setup, then ₹22,500 a month including 2,000 minutes and ₹8 a minute after that. We don't charge GST on either. The monthly fee covers running costs, monitoring and retraining when your prices or processes change, so the care in point 7 above is part of the plan. The AI receptionist is the usual starting point for clinics, salons, coaching centres and service businesses that lose calls after hours.

Whoever you choose, ask for the total monthly cost at your call volume, in writing, with telephony, minimum billing and setup spelled out. A vendor who can’t give you that number isn’t ready to run your phones.
